Blue and Buttercup Spangled Dress and Hat
(doll in back of picture)

This dress can be made with the following:
The Famous “PURITAN” STAR SPANGLED CROCHET
COTTON, Article 40.
3 balls Blue Spangle
2 balls Sunshine Spangle or
The Famous “PURITAN” CROCHET COTTON, Article 40.
3 balls Lt. Blue.
2 balls Buttercup or colors desired
1 yd. narrow ribbon
7 or 8 inch Doll
Steel crochet hook No. 7

DRESS, SKIRT: With Blue ch 38 rather loosely, tr c in 5th st from hook, 2 tr c in each remaining st of ch, join in 4th st of ch.
2nd Round. Ch 4 (counts as 1 tr c) and working in back loop of sts only, tr c in next tr c, * ch 3, 1 tr c in each of the next 2 tr c, repeat from * all around, ch 3, join in 4th st of ch.
3rd Round. Working through both loops of sts for remainder of dress, ch 4, tr c in next tr c, * ch 4, 1 tr c in each of the next 2 tr c, repeat from * all around, ch 4, join, cut thread.
4th Round. Attach Sunshine Spangle or Buttercup in next loop, ch 4, 4 tr c in same space, drop loop from hook, insert in 4th st of ch, pick up loop and pull through, ch 1, popcorn st in same loop (popcorn st: 5 tr c in same space, drop loop from hook, insert in top of 1st tr c, pick up loop and pull through), * ch 5 and in next loop work 2 popcorn sts with ch 1 between, repeat from * all around, join in 1st popcorn st, cut thread.
5th Round. Attach Blue in loop, ch 4, 3 tr c in same space, * ch 4, 4 tr c in next loop, repeat from * all around, ch 4, join in 4th st of ch.
6th Round. Ch 4, 1 tr c in each of the next 3 tr c, tr c in next loop, * ch 4, tr c in same loop, 1 tr c in each of the next 4 tr c, tr c in next loop, repeat from * all around, ending round with ch 4, tr c in same loop, join in 4th st of ch.
7th Round. Ch 4, 1 tr c in each of the next 4 tr c, tr c in next loop, * ch 4, tr c in same loop, 1 tr c in each of the next 6 tr c, tr c in next loop, repeat from * all around ending round with ch 4, tr c in same loop, tr c in next tr c, join in 4th st of ch, cut thread.
8th Round. With Sunshine Spangle or Buttercup work same as
4th round but having ch 8 between popcorn st groups, cut
thread.
9th Round. Attach Blue in loop, ch 4, 9 tr c in same space,
*ch 4, 10 tr c in next loop, repeat from * all around, ch 4,
join in 4th st of ch.
10th Round. Ch 4, 1 tr c in each of the next 9 tr c, tr c in next loop, * ch 4, tr c in same loop, 1 tr c in each of the next 10 tr c, tr c in next loop, repeat from * all around ending round with ch 4, tr c in same loop, join in 4th st of ch.
11 th Round. Ch 4 and work 1 tr c in each tr c and 1 tr c, ch 2, 1 tr c in each ch 4 loop, join, cut thread.
12th Round. Attach Sunshine Spangle or Buttercup in ch 2 loop,*ch 3, 4 tr c in same space, drop loop from hook, insert in 3rd st of ch, pick up loop and pull through, ch 1, 5 tr c in same space, drop loop from hook, insert in 1st tr c, pick up loop and pull through, ch 3, 1 s c in each of the next 14 tr c, s c in next loop, repeat from * all around, join, cut thread.

BODICE: Attach Blue in 1st st at top of skirt, ch 3, 1 d c in each st decreasing 6 sts evenly spaced (29 sts), (to decrease: * thread over hook, insert in next st, pull through and work off 2 loops, repeat from * once, thread over and pull through all loops at one time), ch 3, turn.
2nd Row. 1 d c in each st, ch 3, turn.
3rd Row. * 1 d c in each of the next 5 d c, 2 d c in next d c,
repeat from * across row, ch 3, turn.
4th Row. * 1 d c in each of the next 3 d c, 2 d c in next d c,
repeat from * across row, ch 3, turn.
5th Row. 1 d c in each of the next 8 d c, ch 8, skip 3 d c, 1 d c in each of the next 17 d c, ch 8, skip 3 d c, 1 d c in each of the next 9 sts, ch 3, turn.
6th Row. RUFFLE: Working in back loop of sts, 2 d c in same
space, * 3 d c in next st, repeat from * across row, cut thread.

Attach Blue at neckline and work a row of s c around neck and around back opening, cut thread.
Attach Sunshine Spangle or Buttercup in 1st st of ruffle and
work 1 s c in each d c of ruffle, cut thread.
Place on doll and tie together with small bow at back of neck.
Lace ribbon through waistline and tie in bow at front.

HAT: With Blue ch 5, join to form a ring, ch 3 and work 14 d c in ring, join in 3rd st of ch.
2nd Round. Ch 3, d c in same space, * 2 d c in next st, repeat from * all around, join.
3rd Round. Ch 3, d c in same space, * 1 d c in next st, 2 d c in next st, repeat from * all around, join.
4th Round. Ch 3, 1 d c in each d c, join, cut thread.

TRIM: With Sunshine Spangle or Buttercup * ch 16, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts of ch, 1 s d c in each of the next 3 sts of ch (s d c: thread over hook, insert in st, pull loop through, thread over and work off all loops at one time), 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts of ch, 1 s d c in each of the next 3 sts of ch, 1 s c in each of the last 3 sts, repeat from * 3 times, cut thread leaving an end. Sew to top of hat as illustrated.

Steel crochet hook No. 7

With Pink ch 31, d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each remaining st of ch, turn.
2nd Row. Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dcin each d c, turn.
3rd Row. Ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 4 d c, * 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of the next 5 d c, repeat from * 3 times, turn.
4th Row. Ch 3, d c in next d c, * 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of the next 3 d c, repeat from * 6 times, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, turn.
5th Row. Ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 8 d c, ch 8, skip 3 d c, 1 d c in each of the next 17 d c, ch 8, skip 3 d c, 1 d c in each of the next 9 sts, turn.
6th Row. Ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 3 d c, decrease 1 st (to decrease: * thread over hook, insert in next st, pull loop through and work off 2 loops, repeat from * once, thread over and pull through all loops at one time), 1 d c in each of the next 3 d c, 1 d c in each st of ch 8, 1 d c in next d c, decrease 1 st, 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, decrease 1 st, 1 d c in each of the next 3 d c, decrease 1 st, 1 d c in each of the next 2 d c, decrease 1 st, d c in next d c, 1 d c in each st of ch 8, 1 d c in each of the next 3 d c, decrease 1 st, 1 d c in each of the last 4 d c, ch 1, turn.
7th Row. 1 s c in each st, ch 1, turn.
8th Row. Working through back loop of sts only work 1 s c in
each s c, cut thread.

SKIRT: With Pink and with right side of 1st row toward you,
attach thread at lower edge of bodice (waistline) and working across starting ch, ch 3, d c in same space, * 2 d c in next st, repeat from * across row, turn.
2nd Row. Ch 3, * 2 d c in next d c, repeat from * across row, ending with 1 d c in 3rd st of end ch, join (114 sts).
3rd Round. * Ch 5, skip 2 d c, s c in next d c, repeat from *
all around.
4th Round. SI st into loop, ch 3, 1 d c, ch 3, 2 d c in same space,* 2 d c, ch 3, 2 d c (Shell) in next loop, repeat from * all around, join in 3rd st of ch.
5th Round. Sl st to ch 3 loop (center of shell), * ch 6, s c in
center of next shell, repeat from * all around, ending with ch
3, d c in sl st (this brings thread in position for next round).
6th Round. * Ch 6, s c in next loop, repeat from * all around
ending with ch 2, tr c in d c.
7th Round. Ch 3, 1 d c, ch 3, 2 d c over the tr c just made, *shell in next loop, repeat from * all around, join in 3rd st of ch.
8th Round. Same as 5th round.
9th Round. Same as 6th round, but ending with ch 6, join in tr c, cut thread.
10th Round. Attach Chartreuse in center of next loop, ch 3,
1 d c, ch 3, 2 d c in same space, * shell in next loop, repeat
from * all around, join in 3rd st of ch, cut thread.
11th Round. Attach Pink in center of shell, * ch 6, s c in center of next shell, repeat from * all around, ending with ch 3, d c in same space as beginning.
12th Round. * Ch 6, s c in next loop, repeat from * all around
ending with ch 6, sl st in d c, cut Pink.
Repeat last 3 rounds twice.

EDGE: Attach Chartreuse in any loop, * ch 3, s c in same loop, ch 3, s c in same loop, ch 3, s c in next loop, repeat from * all around, join, cut thread.
With bodice facing downward, attach Chartreuse in 1st free
d c of 2nd row of skirt, ch 3, s c in next free d c, * ch 2, skip the d c that is worked in, s c in next free d c, ch 3, s c in next free d c, repeat from * all around, join, cut thread.

With wrong side of bodice toward you, attach Chartreuse in
free loop of 1st st of 7th row of bodice (2nd row from neck
edge), * ch 3, skip 1 st, si st in next free st, repeat from *
around neck, ch 3, turn.
Next Row. Sl st in 1st loop, ch 3, si st in same loop, * ch 2, sl st in next loop, ch 3, sl st in same loop, repeat from * across row, cut thread.

Place dress on doll and tie at back of neck and at waistline
with small bow.

STOLE: With Chartreuse * draw up a 1/4 inch loop on hook,
thread over and pull through loop, s c over single loop of st
(single knot st) repeat from * 6 times, turn.
2nd Row. Skip 3 single knot sts, s c in next s c, work a double knot st (double knot st: * draw up a 1/4 inch loop on hook, thread over and pull through loop, s c over single loop of st, repeat from * once) skip 1 s c, s c in next s c, double knot st, skip 1 s c, s c in end st, turn.
3rd Row. Work 3 single knot sts, s c in center s c of 1st double knot st, work a double knot st, s c in center s c of next double knot st, work a double knot st, s c in 1st s c of next knot st, turn. Repeat the last row until stole measures 12 inches, cut thread.

HAIR ORNAMENT: * With Pink ch 10, s c in 2nd st from hook,
s d c in next st of ch (s d c: thread over hook, insert in st, pull through,thread over and pull through all loops at one time) 1 d c in each of the next 4 sts of ch, s d c in next st, s c in next st, sl st in last st of ch, repeat from * once, cut Pink. Attach Chartreuse and repeat from 1st * twice. Place on head as illustrated.

    those are so pretty. i always loved the ones my grandmother made. maybe some day i will have to learn this skill. thank you for sharing your creations.

    Lovely! These were called bed dolls when I was growing up because they were meant to be sat in the middle of your perfectly made bed. When my oldest was little, I made a nice bit of extra change making these and selling them for $25 apiece.
