Barbie’s knit cardigan and tie-on cap

MATERIALS:
Baby or Fingering Yarn, 3 ply, 1/2 oz.
Knitting needles No. 1. (Or English size 12)
Steel crochet hook No.4
4″ or longer neck type zipper

GAUGE: 8 sts 1″; 12 rows 1″,

Seed Stitch – Must always have an odd number of stitches.
K 1 *p 1, k 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat row, knitting in p stitch and purling in a k stitch

CARDIGAN: BODY: Beg at lower edge, cast on 45 sts. Work 4 rows of seed st, then work as follows:
ROW 1 (right side): Work seed st on first 3 sts (right front band), k to last 3 sts, work seed st on these 3st (left front band).
ROW 2: Work seed st on first 3 sts, p across, work seed st on last 3 sts.
Repeat last 2 rows for 2″ from start, end wrong side.

RIGHT FRONT ARMHOLE OPENING: Keeping front band in seed st, work first 11 sts (leaving other 34 sts on needle), turn.
Work these 11 sts only as established for 6 rows.

RIGHT FRONT YOKE: Work 7 rows of seed st on 11 sts. Bind off loosely in seed st.

BACK ARMHOLE OPENINGS: From right side, join; yarn in first st of last long row, (k 1 row, p 1 row) on: center 23 sts for 7 rows leaving 11 sts on needle for left front.

BACK YOKE: Work 7 rows of seed st. Bind: off loosely in seed st
LEFT FRONT ARMHOLE OPENING: From right side, join yarn at armhole of left front, k 8 sts, seed st on last 3 sts. Complete left front same as right front.

SLEEVES: Work both sleeves at once with separate balls of yarn, cast on 13 sts for each sleeve.
WRIST: Work 3 rows of seed st.
K next row and inc 5 sts evenly spaced across each sleeve – 18 sts each sleeve. Beg with p row, work stockinette st for 2-1/2″. Bind off loosely.

FINISHING: Weave shoulder seams for 1/2″ from each ‘armhole side. Weave in sleeves. Weave sleeve seams. Steam-press cardigan lightly. With zipper closed, measure from tab end and cut off other end 1/8 “ less than measurement of sweater opening. Take a 3/4″ piece of bias fold tape or excess from end of zipper and turn under raw ends. Fold in half over cut end of zipper and securely stitch in place, taking several stitches over teeth of zipper. Sew zipper in position with closed end at lower edge of front opening.

TIE -ON CAP: Leaving 15″ length of yarn for use later, cast on 35 sts. Work 16 rows of seed st. Bind off in seed st.
Break off, leaving 15″ length of yarn. Slip crochet hook, thru sts along one short end of band. Working toward loose yarn end, pull yarn end through all sts on hook, ch 1 tightly. Make a 3″ ch for tie. End off. Work another tie on opposite short end in same way.
