MATERIALS:
Baby or Fingering Yarn, 1/2 oz. blue, main color (MC); small amount each of white (W) and black (B)
Knitting needles No. 1 (Or English size 12)
3 small snaps
7 white seed beads
GAUGE: 8sts 1″; 12rows 1″
CARDIGAN: BODY: Beg at lower edge with MC, cast on 45 sts.
RIBBING: ROWS 1 AND 3 (right side): K 2 (front band), work in ribbing of p 1, k 1 to last 2 sts, k 2 (front band).
ROWS 2 AND 4: K 2, work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 to last 2 sts. k 2. Keeping garter st band s at each end, work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece is 2″ from bottom, end right side. Turn.
DIVIDE WORK: K 2, p 8 (left front), bind off next 4 sts (underarm), p 17 sts (back), bind off next 4 sts (under-arm), p 8, last 2 sts, k 2 (right front). Turn.
YOKE PAT NOTE: Always change colors on wrong side, picking up new strand from under dropped strand.
RIGHT FRONT ARMHOLE OPENING AND YOKE:
Work back and forth on first 10 sts as follows: ROW 1 (right side): K 2 MC, k 1 B, k 7 MC.
ROW 2: P 6 MC, p 1 B, p 1 W, k 2 MC.
ROW 3: K 2 MC, k 2 W, k 1 B, k 5 MC.
ROW 4: P 4 MC, p 1 B, p 3 W, k 2 MC.
ROW 5: K 2 MC, k 4 W, k 1 B, k 3 MC
ROW 6: P 2 MC, p 1 B, p 5 W, k 2 MC.
ROW 7: k 2 MC, k 6 W, k 1 B, k 1 MC.
ROW 8: P 1 B, p 7 W, k 2 MC
ROW 9: K 2 MC, k 7 W, k 1 B,
ROW 10: Repeat row 8
Bind off in same colors as last row.
BACK ARMHOLE OPENINGS AND YOKE:
ROW 1: From right side, join MC in first st of back, k 8 MC, k 1 B, k 8 MC.
ROW 2: p 7 MC, p 1 B, joining separate strands for next colors, p 1 W, p 1 B, p 7 MC.
ROW 3: K 6 MC, k 1 B, k 3 W, k 1 B, k 6 MC.
ROW 4: P 5 MC, p 1 B, p 5 W, p 1 B, p 5 MC.
ROWS 5-8: Continue to move B stripes out 1 st to arm sides and work 2 W sts more be-tween B stripes every row, until 1 MC st left at arm sides.
Cut off M
Rows 9, 10, 11: Work 1 st B, 15 W, 1 B
Bind off in same colors as last row.
LEFT FRONT ARMHOLE OPENING AND YOKE:
ROW 1: From right side, join MC at arm side of left front, k 7 MC, k 1 B, k 2 MC.
ROW 2: K 2 MC, p 1 W, p 1 B, p 6 MC.
ROW 3: K 5 MC, k 1 B, k 2 W, k 2 MC.
ROW 4: K 2 MC, p 3 W, p 1 B, p 4 MC
ROWS 5-7: Continue to move B stripe out 1 st to arm side and work 1 W st more between B stripe and front MC band every row until 1 MC st left at arm side. ROW 8: K 2 MC, p 7 W, p 1 B.
ROW 9: K 1 B, k 7 W, k 2 MC.
ROW 10: Repeat row I.
Bind off in same colors as last row.
SLEEVES: With MC, cast on 10 sts. Work in MC ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 5 rows. Drop MC and pick up W. K across row inc 4 sts evenly spaced across — 14 sts. Work 2 more rows W stockinette st. P 1 row B. Cut off W and B. Pick up dropped MC and work in stockinette st, inc 1 st each side of 2nd row–16 sts. Work even until 3″ from bottom. Bind off.
FINISHING: Weave shoulder seams. Weave sleeve seams. Weave in sleeves with seams at center of underarm sts. Steam-press lightly.
NECKBAND: From right side with MC, pick up 20 sts across neck edge. Work in MC ribbing of k 1 p 1 for 2 rows
Bind off loosely in ribbing.
Close fronts with 3 snaps; one at neckband and bottom, 1 at yoke V. Sew 7 seed beads evenly spaced on right front band.
STOCKING CAP: Beg at lower edge with MC, cast on 40sts.
Work in MC k 1, p 1 ribbing for 3 rows.
Drop MC. With W, work in stockinette st for 6 rows. Cut off W.
K 1 row B. Cut off B.
Pick up MC, (p 1 row, k 1 row) twice. NE XT ROW: With MC, p 2 tog across row – 20 sts.
Continue in MC stockinette st, dec 1 st each side every 3rd row until 2 stitches remain. K last 2 sts tog. End off.
Matching colors, Weave back seam. Trim top of hat with tiny W pompon. Tack down tail about 1/4″ above B row.
