For her dining pleasure — a dining room that’s especially suited to the tastes and size of an 11 1/2 fashion doll.
Plastic bottles, detergent boxes, cardboard, a jar and some plastic berry baskets add up to a dining room of distinction. The furniture pieces for the dining room are a round table, four chairs, and a china cabinet to keep a supply of tiny dishes handy.
Table
For the tabletop, use the round lid from a candy or cake tin. Cover the tabletop with adhesive-backed paper in a wood-grain pattern.
For the base of the table, use a small glass jar. Paint the jar and then glue it to the underside of the tabletop.
Chairs
To make the four chairs, you will need two oval plastic bottles (22-ounce size) for the backs of the chairs, and four round plastic bottles
(22-ounce size) for the bases.
To make the back for one chair, cut off and discard the neck and the bottom of the bottle.
Cut the remaining bottle in half lengthwise, as shown below. Use one half for each chair back.
For the base of each chair, use a 3″ section from the bottom of a round bottle. Invert this section and glue it inside the chair back.
For an upholstered seat, cut a circle of cardboard to fit the chair seat. Next, cut a circle of fabric, 1 1/2″ larger than the cardboard circle.
With needle and thread, sew loosely around the edge of the fabric. Place some cotton in the center and then put the cardboard circle over it. Pull the stitches, gathering tightly; knot. Glue on top of the seat, gathered side down.
China Cabinet
To make the cabinet, you need three detergent boxes: two the same size and one slightly wider. For the base of the cabinet, cut the two
matching boxes about 5″‘ high. Then, invert both boxes, and tape the sides together, as shown on the below. Cover the base with
adhesive-backed paper. Paint outlines for drawers on the front of the base.
For the top section of the china cabinet, use the remaining detergent box. Cut this box down so it is about 7″ high. Cut out the front of the
top section, leaving a border all around, as shown. Cover the cabinet with adhesive-backed paper to match the base.
Next, make doors for the top section from the bottoms of four plastic berry baskets. Glue two bottoms together for each door. Paint the
doors. Cut each door to the right size for the opening. Attach each door to the side of the opening with wire for hinges.
For a handle on each door, use a cup hook.
With pliers, squeeze the hook together. Using tin snips, cut off the screw end of the hook. Glue the remaining hook to the door.
For a shelf inside the top section, cut a piece of cardboard to fit, adding 1/2″ on three sides to make tabs, as shown. Cover the shelf with paper. Bend down the tabs and glue them to the inside walls of the top section. Glue the top section of the china cabinet to the base.

This brings back memories of the days I would spend hiding under the lilac bushes with my friend Judy, making furniture for our dolls out of cardboard food containers, spools and matchboxes. Everyone’s father smoked back then; and three of the big matchboxes made a great chest of drawers.
For seat covers, i prefer to use cotton or polyester woven fabric because i like its feel.:,’
