An elegant bedroom, suitable for the most sophisticated 11 1/2″ fashion doll, is made from plastic bottles, cocoa cans and plastic doilies.
Any little girl will love having her doll enjoy this glamorous setting. Simply paint a cardboard carton for the room; then add the furnishings.
Filigree Bed
Here’s a fancy bed — fit for a queen! Use an inverted shoe box to form the main part of the bed. For the headboard, cut a fan-shaped section from a large plastic doily. Glue the headboard on one end of the box. Paint the doily.
For the bedspread, cut a rectangle of fabric large enough to cover the bed, plus 2″ longer. If you want, you can sew nylon net ruffles to the sides of the bedspread. Make a small pillow to tuck under the bedspread.
Dressing Table
For the dressing table, use a round, one-gallon plastic bottle. Cut the bottle down to 5″ high. Invert the bottle and draw a line across the center of the bottom. About 1/2″ from this line, draw another line (shown dotted) across the bottom and down each side. Cut the
bottle down the sides and across the bottom on these lines. Use the large section for the table. Cut out the section to make the legs and curved top of the dressing table, as shown. Glue an ice cream stick behind each leg for support.
Cut 1″ strips from a plastic doily — try to cut the strips so they are matching in design. Glue the strips to the legs and around the top edge of the dressing table. Paint the table and, when dry, add touches of paint here and there to the plastic doily trim for an antiqued effect.
To complete the dressing table, glue plastic doily trim to the back of a pocket mirror. Add a hanger at the top and hang it over the table.
Dressing Table Stool
For the stool, cut a round plastic bottle (quart-size) down to 2 1/2″ high. Invert the remaining section to use for the stool. To make a seat cushion, cover a cardboard circle the size of the stool with a circle of fabric.
The fabric circle should be about 1/2″ larger than the cardboard. Sew around the edge of the fabric circle with needle and thread and then gather it over the cardboard circle; knot.
For the ruffled skirt, cut a piece of fabric and a matching piece of nylon net, 2 1/2″ wide and long enough to go around the bottle twice. Place the strips of material together and stitch along one edge; gather into a ruffle. Sew the ruffle to the seat cushion. Glue the cushion to the stool.
Chest of Drawers
Scroll trim makes this chest of drawers a very feminine furniture piece. To make the chest, you need a shoe box, 3 one-pound cocoa cans and some ice cream sticks.
Cut off one end of the shoe box. Stand the box, open end down, for the chest. Cut three openings in front to fit the cocoa cans on their
sides. The cans will be the drawers. Leave about 1/2″ between drawer openings, and room at the bottom to make legs. Cut out an arch at the bottom of the chest.
To reinforce the 1/2″ sections between the drawer openings, glue an ice cream stick in back of each section. Make drawer glides from ice
cream sticks to support the drawers. To cut the sticks, use kitchen shears, holding your hand close to the shears on the section of stick you will be using. Cut the sticks to the depth of the shoe box. Glue four sticks together for each glide. You will need two glides for each drawer, or six glides in all. Glue the glides in place on the inside of the chest at right angles to the drawer openings, as shown.
To make each drawer, cut an opening in the wide side of the cocoa can, as shown. Fit the drawers in place. For trim, glue scrolls, cut from
plastic doilies, to opposite corners of the drawer fronts. Glue a curved plastic doily strip over the arch at the bottom of the chest. Paint the chest to match the other bedroom pieces. When dry, add paper fasteners for drawer pulls to the front of each drawer.
Chaise Lounge
For a final touch of elegance, make a chaise lounge. For the top and back of the chaise lounge, cut a curved section from the top of a
round, one-gallon plastic bottle. Cut another curved section from the
side of the bottle for the seat. Wire the two sections together through matching holes made in the pieces.
For the legs, cut the top portion, as shown, from two matching quart-size plastic bottles. Make holes and then wire the legs in place at the
front and back of the chaise. Glue plastic doily trim to the back of the chaise.
Make a long cushion to fit the chaise from foam rubber or an old pot holder. Cover the cushion with a fancy material, such as satin or
velvet. Make a matching pillow.
