Make A Patio For Barbie And Her Friends

barbiepatio11

Just what every 11 1/2″ fashion doll needs — a patio for entertaining! Clothespins, egg cartons and spools are a few of the materials that will help to make a patio full of furniture.

Umbrella Table

For the tabletop, cut a section, 1″ high, from the bottom of a round, one-gallon plastic bottle and invert it. Make a hole in the center to fit a 1/4″ dowel. For a pedestal to support the tabletop, glue three large spools to a jar lid.

For the umbrella pole, use a 1/4″ dowel, 15″ long. Spread glue around the bottom of the dowel and insert it into the spools. Slip the
tabletop down over the dowel and glue it on top of the spools. Next, place a small spool on the dowel about 2″ from the top. Wrap the dowel below the spool with tape to hold the spool in place. Paint the table.

To support the umbrella top, you will need a plastic lid about 6 1/2″ across, such as one found on a 3-pound coffee can. Cut a hole in the center of the lid so it will fit on the dowel and rest on the spool.

For the umbrella, measure around the edge of the plastic lid. Cut a rectangle of gaily printed fabric 1 1/2 times this length and wide enough to drape down 2″ below the lid. Sew the ends together. Cut scallops along one edge and, using fairly large stitches, gather the other edge. Place the umbrella over the top of the dowel with the
gathers resting on the tip and the scallops draping down below the lid.

For each chair, cut a section, 1/2″ high, from the bottom of a round, quart-size plastic bottle. Invert this section for the chair seat. Glue two spools together for a pedestal -type support. Glue the pedestal to a 2″ jar lid for a base. Glue the seat of the chair in place.

For a decorative chair back, cut a piece, 4″ long, from the bottom of a plastic tomato basket. Cut slots in the back of the seat, as shown,
to insert the bottom of the chair back. Make as many chairs as you want, painting them to match the table.

Chaise Lounge

To make the seat section of the chaise, cut two lids from egg cartons to 8″ long. Fit one inside the other and glue them together. For the
legs, cut two two-cup sections from the ends of a carton and glue them under the seat.

For the back section of the chaise, apply glue inside the back of the seat section and slip the prongs of 12 round wooden clothespins over the back. Arrange them in a circular fashion. After the glue has dried, paint the chaise.

Make a pad and pillow to fit the chaise from plastic fabric or leatherette.

Lawn Chair

For the seat, remove one side from a wooden berry basket; the remaining basket is the seat and arms of the chair. Apply glue inside the back of the chair and slip 8 clothespins down over the back. Cut the rounded tops from two clothespins and glue them to the corners of the arms. For the legs, cut two two-cup sections from the ends of an egg carton; invert and glue them under the seat. Paint the chair. Make a little pillow for a seat cushion.

Barbecue Grill

A realistic grill is made from a salt box. Cut the salt box in half across the center. Then, cut the top portion in half again, discarding the half with the pouring spout. Cut the end section from the bottom half for the bottom of your grill.

Glue a strip of cardboard across the top of the grill at the front, as shown. Glue on three ice cream sticks for legs. For the grill itself, cut a
piece from the bottom of a plastic berry basket. Paint the barbecue grill.

Finishing Touches

Make a mock flagstone patio to place under the furniture by gluing paper stones to a large piece of paper. You can also add a lawn made from shredded Easter grass or shredded green crepe paper.

For a fence, you can use corrugated cardboard with the corrugations exposed on one side. Cut the top of the fence into points and place it around the flagstone patio.
