Knit Baby Doll Wardrobe – Part Two – A Cardigan Sweater

THE CARDIGAN

BACK: Cast on 27 sts (M—31 sts) (L—35 sts).
1st row: K2. *P1. K1 Repeat from * to last st. K1.
2nd row: K1. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows of (K1. P1)ribbing once, then continue even in stocknitte st (knit one row, purl one row) until work measures 2 ins (M—2 1/2 ins) (L—3 ins) ending with purl row.

To shape armholes: Cast off 2 sts beginning next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each end of needle every row to 19 sts on needle (M —23 sts) (L—27 sts). Continue even until armhole measures 2 ins (M—2 1/4 ins) (L
—2 1/2 ins). Cast off.

LEFT FRONT: Cast on 17 sts (M—19 sts) (L—21 sts).
Work 4 rows (K1. PI) ribbing as given for back.
Proceed:—

1st row: K12 (M—K14) (L—K16). P1. K1. P1. K2.
2nd row: (K1. P1)twice. K2. Purl to end of row.
3rd row: K10 (M—K12) (L—K14). P3. K1. P1. K2.
4th row: (K1. P1)twice. K4. Purl to end of row.
5th row: K8 (M—K10) (L—K12). P5. K1. P1. K2.
6th row: (K1. P1)twice. K6. Purl to end of row.
These 6 rows complete one pattern for left front.

Continue even in pattern until work measures same length as back to armholes, ending at side edge.

To shape armhole: Keeping continuity of pattern, cast off 2 sts beginning next row, then dec 1 st at armhole edge every row to 13 sts on needle (M—15 sts) (L—17 sts).
Continue even until armhole measures 3/4 inch (M—1 inch) (L—1  1/4 inch) ending at front edge.

To shape neck: Keeping continuity of pattern, cast off 5 sts beginning next row, then dec 1 st at neck edge every row to 5 sts on needle (M—6 sts) (L—7 sts).
Continue even until same length as back to shoulder. Cast off.

RIGHT FRONT: Cast on 17 sts (M—19 sts) (L—21 sts).
Work 4 rows (K1. P1) ribbing as given for back.
Proceed:—

1st row: K2. P1. K1. P1. Knit to end of row.
2nd row: P11 (M—P13) (L—P15). K2. (P1. K1)twice.
3rd row: K2. P1. K1. P3. Knit to end of row.
4th row: P9 (M—P11) (L—P13). K4. (P1. K1)twice.
5th row: K2. P1. K1. P5. Knit to end of row.
6th row: P7 (M—P9) (L -P11). K6. (P1 K1)twice.
These 6 rows complete one pattern for right front.

Continue to correspond to left front, being careful to have all shapings for opposite side.

SLEEVES: Cast on 17 sts (M—19 sts) (L—21 sts).
Work 4 rows (K1. P1) ribbing as given for back, then continue in stockinette st increasing 1 st each end of needle on next and every following 4th row to 23 sts on needle (M—25 sts) (L—27 sts).
Continue even until sleeve from beginning measures 2 3/4 ins (M—3 1/4 ins) (L—3 3/4 ins) ending with purl row.

To shape cap: Cast off 2 sts beginning next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each end of needle every row to 5 sts on needle. Cast off. Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Work 1 row sc around neck. Sew 4 buttons in position on front band.
